The name of the town comes from a prickly shrub called calafate, Berberis buxifolia, that has small leaves and yellow flowers in spring and with a very sweet fruit that stains the tongue purple. And according to legend whoever tastes calafate always comes back. The main attraction of the town is its proximity to Los Glaciares National Park and its unquestioned star: the Perito Moreno Glacier.
